Questions Help a Newb

I have an extremely basic grasp on what I’m doing/looking at. Can anyone give me helpful resources or tips for viewing information that I’ve downloaded. I currently haven’t downloaded anything out of fear it’s going to have virus/malware hidden inside its contents. Should I run everything inside a VM? Can I just use notepad, or do I need some kind of script software? I would like to learn more, but am unsure where to start. Thank you in advance.
